This paper focuses on the etymological analysis of the terms for “goodness”, “strength”, and “perfection” employed in the Gothic and Old Church Slavonic versions of the Gospels, carried out, respectively, by Wulfila and by Cyrill and Methodius. These semantic fields are of particular interest with regard to the ideology underlying in the different languages, since they convey deeply embedded meanings that are no longer recognizable. To complete and integrate the analysis, also the terms used in the Latin Vulgata for the same concepts will be studied.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the etymological analysis of the terms for “goodness”, “strength”, and “perfection” employed in the Gothic and Old Church Slavonic versions of the Gospels, carried out, respectively, by Wulfila and by Cyrill and Methodius. These semantic fields are of particular interest with regard to the ideology underlying in the different languages, since they convey deeply embedded meanings that are no longer recognizable. To complete and integrate the analysis, also the terms used in the Latin Vulgata for the same concepts will be studied.
