Twenty-first-century cities are experiencing increasing pressure: climate crisis, congested mobility, energy vulnerability, urban loneliness. The models inherited from the past are no longer able to sustain this complexity. We must imagine a city capable of reducing its own “weight” — ecological, infrastructural, social, and symbolic. In this sense, lightness does not coincide with fragility, but with efficiency, care, and distributed intelligence. What is most compromised today are the connections between people and their surroundings: urban landscapes deteriorated by years of neglect, transformation processes that have ignored the foundations of civil coexistence. Connections and civility thus become key words for resuming a conversation that has been interrupted: the former evokes co-existence as a weaving of relationships; the latter refers to the collective responsibility that underpins urban life. It is no coincidence that many architecture studios now prefer to define themselves as “research laboratories”: places where the issues of shared living are addressed through precise, adaptable solutions capable of restoring to the “architect’s hand” an experimental role, no longer bound to definitive or all-encompassing outcomes. This research draws on interdisciplinary contributions and aims at an architecture connected to something beyond itself: new functions, new uses, new forms of sociality. Cities are in a critical phase, and their survival depends on the ability to develop design strategies that regenerate the values of civil coexistence through contemporary, agile, and transformative interventions. My contribution examines several significant experiences in the field of public-space architecture, highlighting their degree of innovation, functional effectiveness, modes of interaction with the public, and their impact on the quality of urban life.
