To occur, the Fantastic needs the presence of the real, presupposes the concept of reality, a known space, a common knowledge. The city offers the ideal basis where fantastic stories can be born. In dealing with Fantastic Literature, we often come across stories located in existing cities: the essay considers three Italian cities that three writers have chosen as the setting for their fantastic stories. The study focuses on comparing Milan described by Dino Buzzati, Venice described by Elsa Morante, Rome described by Giorgio Vigolo. The stories chosen are centred around two issues: on the one hand the relationship the characters have with the city, which is expressed by two opposite poles, as to say their relationship of identity or their relationship of geographical otherness; on the other hand, the functionality of the city for the fantastic discourse: the urban space is considered as a meeting place, without it the incredible adventures told and experienced by the characters could not happen. The three cities are recognizable in the representation of streets and squares; however, in the course of the narration the reader has the impression to lose the dimension of space and time.
