This paper illustrates new results of the international research project pa-i-to. Particular attention is attributed to the investigation of “materiality” and the revision of difficult readings in the Mycenean corpus of Knossos. RTI technology has helped to (re-)address the debated reading of KN F(1) 51 v.2 and to establish the presence of ma-ka on the tablet beyond doubt. In the light of this new data several linguistic and philological observations are formulated. By combining new digital technologies with traditional methods we also strived to steer away from the bi-polar methodology including the epigraphical (philological) and stylistic approach that impedes exploration into literacy and its display. In addressing the materiality of the tablets through 3D-laser scanning and RTI, we examined how shaping techniques, and the handling of tablets after they were dried out and inscribed may illuminate us on the chaîne operatoire followed by the scribes.
