This essay explores the systematic presence of adaptations from foreign novels, particularly French and English ones in nineteenth-century Italian opera. It also examines how, after promoting the maturation of an authentically romantic poetics, this presence systematically keeps intersecting the aesthetical and ethical question of realism as a device designed to take charge of the present world and its urgencies.
