Piracy has dramatically increased in the last 10 years as a consequence of the growth of the information society and the emerging of modern and sophisticated technologies that allow easily to copy film, music and other similar contents. The aim of the paper is to measure the movie piracy’s diffusion in Italy; moreover, using both IPSOS collected data for movie piracy and official statistics for the movie sector (2009), we estimate the impact of piracy on the Italian film industry, in terms of lost revenues and jobs. The results can be useful to help policy makers and movie companies to develop better strategies to protect and enforce intellectual property rights.

Abstract
Piracy has dramatically increased in the last 10 years as a consequence of the growth of the information society and the emerging of modern and sophisticated technologies that allow easily to copy film, music and other similar contents. The aim of the paper is to measure the movie piracy’s diffusion in Italy; moreover, using both IPSOS collected data for movie piracy and official statistics for the movie sector (2009), we estimate the impact of piracy on the Italian film industry, in terms of lost revenues and jobs. The results can be useful to help policy makers and movie companies to develop better strategies to protect and enforce intellectual property rights.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
