The use of point of view is arguably the narrative technique which most distinguishes Henry James' work. In The Portrait of a Lady this technique is twinned with a principle of contradiction, which undelines the freedom of the character. This is evident both at the thematic and at the sylistic levels, where puns and negation are recurring figures. Both devices can also be associated with Schiller's idea of game as the only instinct that can grant human freedom. Furthermore they confirm the modernist framework which emphasises the organicism of the novel as a narrative form: this intent is well reflected by the representation of Isabel Archer as a sort of arabesque, and as a rose.
L'uso del punto di vista è la tecnica narrativa che più contraddistingue James come autore. In The Portrait of a Lady, questa tecnica si affianca al principio di contraddizione come libertà del personaggio, espediente che appare sia al livello tematico sia al livello stilistico, nell'uso del pun e nelle ricorrenti negazioni, e che si può riportare all'idea schilleriana di istinto del gioco come forma di libertà. A queste si affianca l'ideale organico del romanzo modernista, che ben si riflette nell'immagine del personaggio di Isabel Archer, tra l'arabesco e la rosa.
