The essay explores Dulce Chacón's novel La voz dormida (2002), along with the Italian translation (Le ragazze di Ventas) and the film adaptation directed by Benito Zambrano (2011), subtitled in English, concentrating on the rendering of orality. Both in the book and in the film version the narrative pattern emerges from the intertwining voices of the characters, a silenced chorus of women, though determined to resist Franco's repression. The first part focuses on the novel and its intersemiotic translation. Starting from a non-hierarchical idea of adapatation as intertextuality, it highlights the devices of narrative dialogism and the mimetic potential of the written word. The second part compares the dialogues and the English subtitles, adopting Gottlieb's strategies and focusing on the shift from orality to writing entailed by subtitling as a form of diasemiotic audiovisual translation.
