The study offers a comprehensive definition of employee engagement based on a critical review of extant literature. Furthermore, it represents the first study conducted in Italy about managerial practices adopted by companies in order to affect employee engagement. Finally, the paper develops and tests a model showing the linkages among contextual factors and managerial approaches to support employee engagement adopted by companies.
