Does the manner matter? Yes, it does. Abstruse (abstract and long) arguments, though correct, can hardly convince. Throughout his life Hume reflects on his own abstruse manner and the readers’ reaction to it. He is also deeply interested in style, and cannot separate it from the argument, as in the Leechman affair. He detects particular abstruseness in the first book of the Treatise and attempts to find a remedy: ‘Of modern philosophy’ offers both an ‘abstruse’ and an ‘easy’ version of the same argument. Hume tries in different ways to save his juvenile work upon the same theory that should condemn it. Since there is no abstruse success and scarcely abstruse matter without abstruse manner, in the moral Enquiry Hume avoids and hides some intractable matter and abandons his favourite anatomy metaphor. Yet, like the Philosophical Essays, the Political Discourses still defend abstruse philosophy. The truth of a doctrine ought not to depend upon its abstruse manner or dangerous consequences, yet we prefer simple truths and useful errors. “Why dig up the pestilence from the pit, in which it is buried?”, Hume asks, thinking of the Treatise. Here the pestilence of abstruseness goes up and down the pit. The movement recalls the dialectic of scepticism and life, which is the emblem of Hume’s scepticism
