The article explores the notion of compassion through the lens of contemporary semiotics, starting from its lexicographic definition and deepening its narrative, axiological, and ethical dimensions. By engaging with Landowski’s regimes of meaning—particularly the regime of adjustment—and Sherwin’s eudaimonic account of identity, the authors show how compassion entails forms of participation and union that ground new modes of relation and community. The phenomenological discussion of empathy and sympathy (Husserl, Scheler, Stein) clarifies the processes through which the other is recognized as a subject, highlighting their connections with expression and intersubjectivity. The article adopts a semioethical perspective in which compassion becomes an interpretive principle capable of linking semiotics, philosophy, and the humanities, offering a framework for understanding the dynamics of living together in contemporary societies.
