Thomas Szasz was often regarded as a representative of the so-called «antipsychiatry» movement. We contend that the ethical and political dimensions of his thought were far more influential than the question of the «status» of mental illness. Indeed, the philosophical-ethical (and political) orientation of Szasz constitutes the central axis of his intellectual production. Szasz applied a classical liberal conception to diverse aspects of human behaviour in areas related to medicine, elaborating the thesis that choices and decisions are always made by individuals who are entirely free and responsible.

Abstract

Thomas Szasz was often regarded as a representative of the so-called «antipsychiatry» movement. We contend that the ethical and political dimensions of his thought were far more influential than the question of the «status» of mental illness. Indeed, the philosophical-ethical (and political) orientation of Szasz constitutes the central axis of his intellectual production. Szasz applied a classical liberal conception to diverse aspects of human behaviour in areas related to medicine, elaborating the thesis that choices and decisions are always made by individuals who are entirely free and responsible.
