The new blockchain technologies (including Smart Contracts and integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies) are progressively penetrating as well as changing the current production of trade structures of the agri-food and wine sector. This paper examine the impact that these new technologies have on the trade mark, indications of origin (PDO, PGI and TSG) and certification systems, as are currently regulated in the particular sector of the agri-food chain. This is first to demonstrate the possible supplementary role of these technologies, in particular where the functions to which the distinctive signs, the certifications, and the indications of geographical origin are ancillary have shown some crisis of effectiveness. Secondly, this is also to determine whether these technologies can make the competitive mechanism even more efficient with regards to the function of optimal allocation of resources in this particular sector.
