New technologies such as blockchain, smart contracts, and the internet of things (Io) promise to fulfill auiliary functions for signs and indications of origin used in the agri-food sector. his study first eamines the system’s distinctive signs and indications of origin to identify what these auiliary functions of the new blockchain technologies may be. hese technologies can flank the traditional tools for communi- cating correct information to the consumer about food products and thus carry out a supplementary function to ensure greater effectiveness for the interests governed by the rules dictated on the subect both by food and IP legislation. his work eamines these possible ancillary functions, mainly to understand how the greater effectiveness of the aforementioned tasks affects merchant mechanics and fair competition in the agri-food sector.
