Transmedia practices in the Japanese cultural industry are frequent, following a model called media mix. Here I present a particular case of transmediality by following the relationship between josei manga (comics aimed at adult women) and live-action cinema, through two works by comic artist Okazaki Kyōko: Helter Skelter, adapted to film by Ninagawa Mika in 2012, and River’s Edge, adapted by Yukisada Isao in 2018. In order to understand, on the one hand, how Okazaki’s portrayal of young women distances itself from shōjo manga (comics aimed at school-age girls) and, on the other hand, the scope of the adaptations and the ways in which they amplify Okazaki’s critical discourse, in contrast to more commercial manga adaptations, I would like to highlight the intertextual and intermedial aspects of these comics and films.
