Since 1964 the Sicilian artist Emilio Isgrò has been ‘burning’ the classics. Still today, he claims to be on the opposite side of cancel culture. By erasing and rewriting ancient texts, he aims at making them rise from the ashes, like the Phoenix. As a playwright, in the early 1980s, he erased and rewrote Aeschylus on the ruins of the earthquake in the Belice valley (Orestea di Gibellina). In 2024, he has brought his Erased Odyssey (Odissea cancellata) to the great theatre of Pompeii: Homer and his characters have been brought to life among the stones and the inhabitants of the ghost town, buried by the volcano (see the website of the Festival Pompeii Theatrum Mundi.

Abstract
Since 1964 the Sicilian artist Emilio Isgrò has been ‘burning’ the classics. Still today, he claims to be on the opposite side of cancel culture. By erasing and rewriting ancient texts, he aims at making them rise from the ashes, like the Phoenix. As a playwright, in the early 1980s, he erased and rewrote Aeschylus on the ruins of the earthquake in the Belice valley (Orestea di Gibellina). In 2024, he has brought his Erased Odyssey (Odissea cancellata) to the great theatre of Pompeii: Homer and his characters have been brought to life among the stones and the inhabitants of the ghost town, buried by the volcano (see the website of the Festival Pompeii Theatrum Mundi.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
