This paper explores the function of image production in literature by means of the element of fire. Gabriele D'Annunzio's The Flame of Life is explored via the images described by the main character, Stelio Effrena. The poet is inspired by the visual memory of the Venetian coloristic tradition and creates an immense crucible of fire wherein words, images, and sensations fuse together to produce an effect of synesthesia in the public. The subtle alchemy of Effrena's technique shapes the instantaneous poetic intuition by an extension of perception. In this sense, the poet becomes the high priest of the new religion of Beauty.

Abstract
This paper explores the function of image production in literature by means of the element of fire. Gabriele D'Annunzio's The Flame of Life is explored via the images described by the main character, Stelio Effrena. The poet is inspired by the visual memory of the Venetian coloristic tradition and creates an immense crucible of fire wherein words, images, and sensations fuse together to produce an effect of synesthesia in the public. The subtle alchemy of Effrena's technique shapes the instantaneous poetic intuition by an extension of perception. In this sense, the poet becomes the high priest of the new religion of Beauty.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
