Leone Stoppani, a minor figure in the crisis of Italian Modernism of the early xx Century, had an encounter in the 1950s with two very different representatives of the Catholic Church: Luigi Moneta, who tried to reconcile him with the Church, and the biblical scholar Giovanni Rinaldi, who established an intellectual relationship with Stoppani. These were two faces of the Catholic Church, ruled in those years by Pius xii and undergoing change. This essay aims to analyse the issue through Stoppani’s correspondence with them.
