"Io sono un anfibio, un centauro": spunti realistici e trasposizioni fantastiche in alcuni racconti di Primo Levi

When we consider the short stories by Primo Levi it is necessary to highlight the apparent anomaly of the author. Levi is known in particular for his novels strongly connected with reality, dedicated to his period of imprisonment in a concentration camp; however, in the rest of his production, Levi often chooses the Fantastic mode. This choice could be considered as a betrayal of the writer in respect of the realistic structures. As a matter of fact, by using the Fantastic, he effectively describes the loss of harmony with ourselves and with the world around us. Levi records unexpected phenomena by using the sense of bewilderment, the threat to our habits, the existence of extraordinary events which are present in everyday life. He draws from the culture and the society of his time and he shows human being’s solitude and anxiety towards the technological world.

Considerare la narrativa breve di Primo Levi significa evidenziare l’anomalia solo apparente del nostro autore: Levi, noto ai più per i romanzi legati al periodo di prigionia nel lager e dunque narrazioni fortemente aderenti alla realtà, sceglie spesso le modalità del fantastico che solo a uno sguardo superficiale potrebbero far pensare a un tradimento dello scrittore nei confronti dei canoni realistici. In realtà, far uso del fantastico è un modo concreto per far leva sulla perdita di armonia con noi stessi e con il mondo attorno a noi: nel senso di smarrimento, nella minaccia alle nostre abitudini, nell’esistenza di eventi straordinari che non appartengono ad altri mondi possibili ma si agitano nella vita di tutti i giorni si attestano fenomeni imprevisti che vengono registrati da Levi. Egli attinge dalla cultura e dalla società del suo tempo, presenta la solitudine e l’ansia dell’uomo di fronte al mondo tecnologico, spesso denunciandone gli eccessi.
