How does contemporary italian cinema imagine the world? Quoting a volume by Jacques Aumont dedicated to the methodology of film analysis, this doctoral project asks "what contemporary Italian cinema thinks about". And, trying to respond to another suggestion by Aumont - «can a film be an act of theory?» - paradoxically proposes not to force films into a theory, but to make them speak for themselves. 268 films produced in Italy in the pre-pandemic period from 2010 to 2019 were filed, chosen on the basis of three criteria: 1) the 10 highest-grossing film per year; 2) films nominated for artistic prizes at the David di Donatello; 3) films presented in competition at the Locarno, Berlin, Cannes and Venice festivals. A quantitative study was then constructed to study the sample through a mostly closed-ended questionnaire, designed to investigate the characteristics of the protagonists and secondary characters, the conflicts and themes that the films propose. This work gives an account of the results obtained, building an identity card of the Italian characters and analyzing the items Lie, Family, Politics, Sex.
