Collaborative translation from antiquity to the present has played a key role in the transmission and assimilation of knowledge in cross-cultural encounters, and it may be surprising that this area remains one of the least explored in translation histories. Extensive research addressing the plural practices of translation has only recently begun to show an interest in certain shared activities. In this essay, we investigate some shared translation practices that can be traced back to the transmission of scientific and philosophical knowledge generated by the fruitful contact between ArabIslamic, Christian-Latin, Greek and Jewish civilizations (between the 9th and the 16th century). In the final part, we will point out the need for a broader reflection on the intrinsic plurality of translation by institutions, sector associations, the translation industry, and universities, in order to move towards a new awareness of the translator’s profession.

Abstract
Collaborative translation from antiquity to the present has played a key role in the transmission and assimilation of knowledge in cross-cultural encounters, and it may be surprising that this area remains one of the least explored in translation histories. Extensive research addressing the plural practices of translation has only recently begun to show an interest in certain shared activities. In this essay, we investigate some shared translation practices that can be traced back to the transmission of scientific and philosophical knowledge generated by the fruitful contact between ArabIslamic, Christian-Latin, Greek and Jewish civilizations (between the 9th and the 16th century). In the final part, we will point out the need for a broader reflection on the intrinsic plurality of translation by institutions, sector associations, the translation industry, and universities, in order to move towards a new awareness of the translator’s profession.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
