Metaphor plays a vital role in Henry James's works, not only as rhetorical device but as a means to reveal the character's cognitive processes.

Abstract
Metaphor plays a vital role in Henry James's works, not only as rhetorical device but as a means to reveal the character's cognitive processes. Furthermore, metaphor invests each work with its structural function, becoming a figure not only of the psychological but also of the narrative space. From this perspective for Henry James metaphor and representation are inseparable. The book analyses the works written between 1896 and 1901, from The Figure in the Carpet to The Sacred Fount, a crucial period for the development of Henry James's narrative art. In each of these works metaphor embodies a different facet of the issue, becoming the structural principle on which the work itself is founded: metaphor as arabesque, vision, phantasmagoria, picture, photograph, analogy.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
