Elie Kedourie (1926-1992) analyzed nationalism as a political doctrine, that played primary role in subverting the political order, redesigning it on the basis of the principle that every culturally homogeneous community must have to its own national government. The reading offered by Kedourie, profoundly intertwined with his own biography, underlines some fundamental elements: the collective translation of the concept of autonomy, millenarianism, the strong urge towards homogeneity. All this, besides confirming the illiberal nature of nationalism, can be of use, today, to understand its sources.

Abstract

Elie Kedourie (1926-1992) analyzed nationalism as a political doctrine, that played primary role in subverting the political order, redesigning it on the basis of the principle that every culturally homogeneous community must have to its own national government. The reading offered by Kedourie, profoundly intertwined with his own biography, underlines some fundamental elements: the collective translation of the concept of autonomy, millenarianism, the strong urge towards homogeneity. All this, besides confirming the illiberal nature of nationalism, can be of use, today, to understand its sources.
