The article seeks to show how both Hardy and Lawrence's work is influenced and shaped by the positions they habitually take, both in their writing and their lives with relation to the semantic polarities, 'fear and courage', 'good and evil'. This is a lengthy attempt to draw on work in systemic psychology and particularly positioning theory to analyse reader response to certain classic texts.
