In this paper, we are going to discuss the various formal possibilities of the word Argei, whose explanation is not easy because of the long vowel. Among the different hypotheses, a formation with the -aio- suffix, which would connote a proper noun with a special status, seems to be the most interesting one. This suggestion is proposed on the basis of the comparison with the South-Picene stock apaes, apais, apaíus ‛father/spiritual leader’, in which the same modality of adding – and not substituting – the suffix to the base (as in Latin Appius) is applied; moreover, the lacking of agreement with loca and the use of the verb vocare seem to point in the same direction. These facts, together with other data, such as the attribution of the rite to Numa, indicate the Sabine language as an ideal candidate for the origin of the word, both for its chronology and its cultural sphere.
