This article deals with social housing, an issue which is starting to be discussed and experimented in Italy as a result of the changing social and economic conditions of recent years, which have made it more difficult not only to become a homeowner, but also, at times, to access rented accommodation. After analysing the social and housing situation in Italy compared to other countries where experimentation in this field is more advanced, and identifying the main changes in social conditions, we focus on the ideological bases of social housing, the expectations of the citizens and their need to rebuild communities. In addition there are concerns regarding energy saving and low environmental impact. Finally, we concentrate on the social, architectural and urban planning elements that characterise social housing and cohousing compared to other types of housing.
