This article considers the extent to which literary prizes indicate the existence of a community, a group of readers, local, national and international towards which a text is addressed. It then considers the effect that attention to prizes can have on a literary community and considers the idea that one of the uses of literature may be to help create a community. In this sense the giving of prizes can influence both writers and readers creating new canons of value.
