The article considers raises the question, with so much excellent literature from the past, why should we read new books. It considers the differences, for a critic in particular, of reading new literature about which no criticism has yet been written, particularly literature which is set in the world we know. It suggests there is a special and different aesthetic pleasure to be had from reading the books of our contemporaries as over against those from the past.
