Abstract

In the wake of the killings of journalists of the Charlie Hebdo magazine, the article considers the characteristics and limits of satire. In particular, it suggests that successful satire occurs inside a culture where all or most citizens recognize certain values. Satires across cultures, where the object of the satire is in no way part of the society satirizing it, can lead to all kinds of misunderstanding. Unlike other art forms, satire is intimately linked to notions of 'social usefulness'.
