A road is not only a way for optimising the movements of goods and people, it is a concept packed with social significance that we cannot neglect. Even where it is only considered a transport route, an analysis of what a road is cannot disregard its importance in producing socio-economic, organisational and gravitational changes in the territories it crosses. After a close theoretical analysis of the idea of the road and the main characteristics of today’s Mediterranean cities, the article aims to identify these characteristics and variables through an analysis of Corridor 5 and its impact on the role of the autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia as a European bridge towards the Western Balkans and the Mediterranean.

Abstract
A road is not only a way for optimising the movements of goods and people, it is a concept packed with social significance that we cannot neglect. Even where it is only considered a transport route, an analysis of what a road is cannot disregard its importance in producing socio-economic, organisational and gravitational changes in the territories it crosses. After a close theoretical analysis of the idea of the road and the main characteristics of today’s Mediterranean cities, the article aims to identify these characteristics and variables through an analysis of Corridor 5 and its impact on the role of the autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia as a European bridge towards the Western Balkans and the Mediterranean.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
