«La natura è come una coperta corta, che se la tiri da una parte…»: la denuncia della violazione della natura in alcuni racconti di Primo Levi

Primo Levi in a number of his short stories, using the modules of the Fantastic, moves from the condemnation of cruel experiments carried out in concentration camps to warn us that such atrocities may happen again. With acute prescience he deals with exasperated medical and scientific research that lead to catastrophe. Unscrupulous scientists who manipulate nature (transformation of humans into monsters resembling vultures; experiments that cause extreme devastation and the return of long forgotten diseases), the subsequent rebellion of nature (trees which learn to walk in order to escape man, the cause of all evil), the frantic search for immortality, hybridation, metamorphosis, shocking transformation, aberrant reduplications (Levi’s Mimete is a machine that clones any thing or person): the topics about which Levi deals with. His stories are built on continuous antitheses: scientific approach and attraction towards the absurd, love of natural order and the pleasure to subvert it, goodness and evil. With his short stories Levi introduces us to a future increasingly driven by frantic technological progress, a future which is the scene of disturbing experiments where the extraordinary and unpredictable machines are at work. His forecast of the future and his condemnation are meant to raise scientists’ awareness in the first instance but also, and crucially, the common man of the responsibility for their choices and actions.

Primo Levi, in molti suoi racconti, attraverso i moduli del fantastico, parte dalla denuncia di riprovevoli esperimenti avvenuti nei lager per allertarci che tali atrocità potrebbero ancora oggi verificarsi. Con acuta preveggenza tratta dell’esasperata ricerca medico-scientifica che può condurre alla catastrofe: scienziati senza scrupoli che manipolano la natura (trasformazione di esseri umani in mostri simili ad avvoltoi; sperimentazioni estreme che causano sconvolgimenti e ritorni di malattie debellate da tempo), la conseguente ribellione della natura (gli alberi che imparano a camminare per poter sfuggire all’uomo, causa di ogni male), la ricerca spasmodica dell’immortalità, ibridazioni, metamorfosi, trasformazioni sconvolgenti, reduplicazioni aberranti (il Mimete di Levi è una macchina che clona qualsiasi cosa o persona) sono gli argomenti attorno ai quali Levi si muove. I suoi racconti sono costruiti su continue antitesi: impostazioni scientifiche e attrazione per l’assurdo, amore dell’ordine naturale e gusto di sovvertirlo, bontà e malvagità. Con i suoi racconti Levi ci introduce in un futuro sempre più sospinto dalla molla frenetica del progresso tecnologico, teatro di esperimenti inquietanti o utopistici, in cui agiscono macchine straordinarie e imprevedibili. Le sue anticipazioni sull’avvenire e le sue denunce intendono sensibilizzare gli scienziati in prima battuta ma anche, e soprattutto, l’uomo comune sulla responsabilità delle proprie scelte e azioni.
