The dialogue between Count Attilio and his uncle, “the old count”, and the dialogue between the latter and the Provincial in Chapter XVIII and Chapter XIX of The Betrothed are examined against the background of recent pragmatic theories, with special emphasis on the model of critical discussion, developed in the context of pragmadialectics. The attention for the rhetoric and argumentative implications - regarding questions of ethos and politeness as well as the selection of objects of agreement in the preliminary stages of the debate - make it possible to shed new light on the narrative pattern of the text and on the dramatic representation of the characters. The analysis also brings out Manzoni’s sceptical attitude towards rhetoric and the little trust he had in the power of dialogue and argumentation
