Prisoners are not outside of society: they were once part of it and will be part of it again in the future. The Italian constitution calls for the re-introduction of those who have served their time and has confidence in the possibility of individual growth and change. In this sense, theater in prisons is one of the most effective means of an “informal” educational model, one which can stimulate the learning process in correctional facilities. This volume is a synthesis of one the many theater experiences in Italy, the activities of the e.s.t.i.a. cooperative at the prison in Bollate, where a theater company consisting mostly of inmates has existed for ten years. Through the playwriting, the workshops and the performances that have been created there, one can understand the importance of theater as a learning tool, in counteracting the isolation and socio-cultural alienation common to correctional facilities and creating a sense of belonging and hope in the future that persist well beyond the brief time that one is on stage.

Abstract
Prisoners are not outside of society: they were once part of it and will be part of it again in the future. The Italian constitution calls for the re-introduction of those who have served their time and has confidence in the possibility of individual growth and change. In this sense, theater in prisons is one of the most effective means of an “informal” educational model, one which can stimulate the learning process in correctional facilities. This volume is a synthesis of one the many theater experiences in Italy, the activities of the e.s.t.i.a. cooperative at the prison in Bollate, where a theater company consisting mostly of inmates has existed for ten years. Through the playwriting, the workshops and the performances that have been created there, one can understand the importance of theater as a learning tool, in counteracting the isolation and socio-cultural alienation common to correctional facilities and creating a sense of belonging and hope in the future that persist well beyond the brief time that one is on stage.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
