The book examines Bruno Munari’s relationship with theater, and the pedagogical principles that motivated this artist to bring children and theater closer together. In fact, Munari believes that theater has a didactic function whose origins go back in time. There are numerous undeniable cultural references to avant-garde movements of the twentieth century in other fields that drew attention to the importance of sensory perception, foremost among them Futurism, of which Munari was an exponent. However, the volume makes no attempt to cover all of Munari’s artistic career, but focuses instead on the workshops and theater activities Munari engaged in during his life. The constant stimulation this artist exercised on the imagination - his and ours alike – makes his work compelling even today. Fantasy that must not be confused with simple spontaneity, which Munari abhorred: a controlled fantasy, in line with contemporary pedagogical canons. Munari’s teaching activities with children revolved around play, and how playing is transformed into signs, graphic and expressive, a vector of meaning and an endless source of new stimuli. This can be seen in the few performances he oversaw, which exhibit a highly unusual view of theater, based on visual stimuli and, above all, light, fruit of his experiences in the ‘50s, when Munari was part of MAC. Stimuli, senses and play are the keys to understanding the work of this unique and original artist, who methodically applied his theories to the teaching of theater, among other disciplines. The book concludes with an analysis of the performance ‘Cappucceto bianco’, or Little White Riding Hood, inspired by Munari’s piece Little Red, Green, Yellow, Blue and White Riding Hood, exemplifying the multifaceted nature of the great maestro’s creative output.
