Abstract

In Catholic education in Mexico during the first half of the twentieth century the efforts of the Jesuits in the Sierra Tarahumara were perhaps the most original and innovative , both in a missionary and strictly educational aspect. One of the most important factor in their interest in an education that was "active" and compatible with the social economic and cultural carachteristics of the region. In this sense the mission was an "advanced laboratory" in the approach of the Mexican Church towards the natives,in a period of growing tension of relationships with Public instituzions and of consolidation of a national educative policy of an incorporative stamp. This article seeks to reconstruct this particular experience with the population of the Tarahumara, which is significant in the picture of the pluricultural richness of the native Meso-American world. The attacched original documents are letters of 1921 from the provincial father, Camillo Crivelli, to the Curia Generalizia en Rome, after his visit to the mission.
