Abstract

How does the new world, increasingly dominated by information and its flows, express itself in architecture? What choices, what revolution, what new sensibility is emerging? How is it possible, through a logical leap or a burst of creative ingenuity, to address the multiple reasons and situations of the contemporary world and, at the same time, ensure that the new potential linked to electronics can be transformed, reified into architecture? The volume Ito Digitale allows readers to systematically study many elements of the work of the great Japanese architect, to follow the still-evolving lines of his thought, and to anticipate built outcomes that appear even more interesting and exciting than those of the past.

This text was originally published in 2008, inspired by the remarkable projects Toyo Ito was undertaking at the time in collabora tion with internationally acclaimed engineers. His work offered a distinctive interpretation of the evolving relationship between architectural design and digital technologies-demonstrating how computational tools could be harnessed to generate new built environments and enrich our spatial experience with unprecedented meanings and sensations. In 2013, five years after the book’s release, Toyo Ito was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The jury’s citation reads: “Throughout his career, Toyo Ito has been able to produce a body of work that combines conceptual innovation with superbly executed buildings. Creating outstanding architecture for more than 40 years, he has successfully undertaken libraries, houses, parks, theaters, shops, office buildings and pavilions, each time seeking to extend the possibilities of architecture.” The works analyzed in this volume remain seminal examples of Ito’s experimental ethos and his commitment to expanding the boundaries of the built environment. Each project weaves together conceptual inquiry, poetic expression, and structural innova tion-consistently challenging fixed notions of architectural form and function. As Ito himself stated upon receiving the prize: “Therefore, I will never fix my architectural style and never be satisfied with my works.” It is within this framework that the need to translate this book into English becomes evident. The book opens with a preface by Antonino Saggio, architectural theorist and historian, full professor of Architectural and Urban Design at the Faculty of Architecture of Sapienza University of Rome, and the creator and founder of the series IT Revolution in Architecture.
