During the XX century the Italian writers were asked to consider the problem about the language that changes with the change of the historical and social situation and the way they must follow when they write. This essay examines the transformation of the Italian language from the Neorealism (Pavese, Calvino, Meneghello…); it analyses the relationship between literature and industrial reality and the subsequent link between language and dialect. After a quick look at Neoavanguardia, it applies several pages to Pasolini and to his Nuove questioni linguistiche on «Rinascita» in 1964, which sowed a lively debate. This study ends with an analysis of the language after 1968 and in particular of the postmodern period (from Benni’s comic-grotesque to Baricco’s poetic prose to Busi’s defiances to Tamaro’s pseudo romantic prose to Calvino’s and Eco’s novels).
