In ancient Greece, actors and chorus members notoriously wore masks and performed dramas in wide, open-air spaces: the audience could not see their facial expressions, but was deeply sensitive to their movements, gestures, and voices. These weapons, in theatrical terms, ensured the first actor (pro- tagonistès) an extraordinary power. In more recent years, although the au- dience and context of performance have inevitably changed, the use of body and voice is still relevant for actors, as my paper aims at showing through selected case-studies, among modern adaptations of ancient dramas.

Abstract
In ancient Greece, actors and chorus members notoriously wore masks and performed dramas in wide, open-air spaces: the audience could not see their facial expressions, but was deeply sensitive to their movements, gestures, and voices. These weapons, in theatrical terms, ensured the first actor (pro- tagonistès) an extraordinary power. In more recent years, although the au- dience and context of performance have inevitably changed, the use of body and voice is still relevant for actors, as my paper aims at showing through selected case-studies, among modern adaptations of ancient dramas.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
