This essay proposes an epistemological inquiry on «artificial empathy», understood as the area of current scientific research dedicated to developing robotic agents capable of interacting with humans through affective signals – i.e., emotions. Drawing the general lines of an epistemology of artificial em- pathy, the work presented in these pages intends to define the basic elements of an effective ethical approach to the problem of the social sustainability of the diffusion of this new generation of robots.
