This doctoral thesis delves into the inherent collective nature of art, emphasizing the dynamics of sharing and exchange within community-based art ecosystems. It examines practices shaped by diverse contributions, highlighting the significance of these ecosystems in sociocultural interactions. The research originates from contemplations on art's societal role, inspired by contemporary interest in communal art. It scrutinizes the journey from the historic avant-garde movements to modern collective creations, using the contemporary art collective ruangrupa as a pivotal example. This study traverses 20th-century art history, identifying moments where art challenged societal norms and inequalities. It investigates the developmental trajectory of artistic practices within modernist discourse, analyzing collectivism's impact on art history, societal activism, and spectatorship. Focusing on strategies used by contemporary collectives for knowledge sharing, interdisciplinary collaboration, and public engagement, the thesis reevaluates artistic expression as a collective process, exploring its role in building inclusive, geographically and culturally attuned community ecosystems. This comprehensive analysis addresses artistic, institutional, and curatorial production, aiming to foster new social organization methods and enhance communal living through art.
