The Vatican Pietà was defaced on May 22, 1972 by an act of vandalism: on the day of Pentecost, a thirty-four-year-old Australian geologist of Hungarian origin named László Tóth, eluding surveillance, managed to hit Michelangelo's work with a hammer fifteen times in a few seconds, shouting "I am Jesus Christ, risen from the dead!" Before it was grabbed and rendered harmless. Television news programs around the world covered the tragic event, filling the schedules of the time for weeks. RAI produced Brando Giordani's important work "La violenza e la Pietà" (1972) on the immediate restoration, a documentary distributed free of charge throughout the world. In 2004, the master of cinema Michelangelo Antonioni made a short film entitled "Lo sguardo di Michelangelo" in which the director, afflicted by the consequences of a serious stroke that had struck him some time before, carries out an investigation mute, haptic and visual on the marble surface of the Moses of San Pietro in Vincoli. The two works, of considerable visual impact, will be proposed for a comparison and historical-artistic, theoretical reflection, about the modes of emotional narration also considering the cognitive aesthetic shift: from the physical-sculptural artifact of Michelangelo, to its reading in the translated and multimedia dimension.
I am Jesus Christ, risen from the dead!

Abstract
The two works, of considerable visual impact, will be proposed for a comparison and historical-artistic, theoretical reflection, about the modes of emotional narration also considering the cognitive aesthetic shift: from the physical-sculptural artifact of Michelangelo, to its reading in the translated and multimedia dimension.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
