This paper focusses on a unicum from the Minoanized harbor town of Akrotiri (Thera) – a “véritable ostracon”, to use Olivier’s words, bearing a Linear A inscription (THE Zg 5). A new reading is proposed for this key document from the Cycladic corpus of linear A, in the light of a thorough study of the material and recent re-examination of the epigraphic evidence emerging from the site. Particular attention is attributed to the epigraphic, palaeographic and contextual analyses. Further observations are formulated on the heuristic perspective (and limits) of research on the interpretation of sematographic signs (acrophonic abbreviations and logograms), in the light of the evidence suggested by the Mycenaean and Greek côté.

Abstract
This paper focusses on a unicum from the Minoanized harbor town of Akrotiri (Thera) – a “véritable ostracon”, to use Olivier’s words, bearing a Linear A inscription (THE Zg 5). A new reading is proposed for this key document from the Cycladic corpus of linear A, in the light of a thorough study of the material and recent re-examination of the epigraphic evidence emerging from the site. Particular attention is attributed to the epigraphic, palaeographic and contextual analyses. Further observations are formulated on the heuristic perspective (and limits) of research on the interpretation of sematographic signs (acrophonic abbreviations and logograms), in the light of the evidence suggested by the Mycenaean and Greek côté.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
