Can a robot interact with us as equals? Can it be able to read human social signals and respond convincingly? Can it communicate through emotions? One of the emerging areas of artificial intelligence, social robotics, is transferring these questions from science fiction to theoretical and applicative research. The robots produced by this discipline are machines designed to interact with humans in socially meaningful ways, playing roles such as the mediator in education, the assistant ad personam or the assistant nurse. Paul Dumouchel and Luisa Damiano propose a philosophical exploration of today's frontiers of social robotics, highlighting the theoretical assumptions and experimental developments that open new ways to think human mind, sociality and emotionality. Along these lines, the authors enter the debate of the sciences of the mind and artificial intelligence, developing an innovative approach to the ethical challenges imposed by the project to be supported by artificial social partners.
