From their juvenile poetry and earliest critical essays to their mature masterpieces, both Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot shared and demonstrated a lifelong study, interest, and love for Dante Alighieri as a poet and as a theorist of poetry, style, eloquence, and literary criticism. The essay offers a wide and in-depth spectrum of textual evidence (published and unpublished sources) from Pound’s and Eliot’s critical essays and from the entire corpus of their poetry, stressing and highlighting Dante’s fundamental and shaping influence and inspiration on the two Modernist poets and critics.
