This book examines how the process of translation offers a tool for literary criticism, while stressing that a highly developed critical awareness is essential for the translator. It does this through extended analyses of Italian translations of the English modernists. Essentially, aside from its reflections on translation, the book offers new approaches to the work of Lawrence, Joyce, Woolf, Beckett, Henry Green and Barbara Pym, approaches suggested by the specific translation problems each author presents.
