We will describe the evolution of cinemas on a historic and structural level. In fact they have always been places for social gathering and, for a long time, the chosen and almost exclusive location for movie screenings. We begin with a historical introduction, dealing briefly with the crucial stages that Italian cinemas have gone through, and will then focus on a description of the different types of cinema that over time have appeared in the towns and cities across the peninsula: from the large city centre cinemas, to avant-garde cinemas and small parish cinemas. Equal importance will also be given to situations that go beyond the confines of the cinema, opening horizons towards alternative spaces. Most of the examples described in this paper refer to the Milan cinema network, given that in recent years the city of Milan has proved to be at the forefront in offering alternative cinematographic proposals and Lombardy is the Italian region with the greatest numbers of cinemas and filmgoers (agcult.it).
