The chapter analyses, in the broader reasearch framework, the role of media in shaping female perceptions of risk and safety in the urban context. After considering the main literature about risk and danger and data about risk perception in Italy, the article examines the results of focus groups, showing how women assign different degrees of responsibility to mass media regarding the construction of more or less risky situations in various areas of Milan. Overall, the role of media appears to be one of construction of a "mediated city" which connects with personal experiences and which constitutes a parameter for the perception of risk and safety in the city.

Abstract

The chapter analyses, in the broader reasearch framework, the role of media in shaping female perceptions of risk and safety in the urban context. After considering the main literature about risk and danger and data about risk perception in Italy, the article examines the results of focus groups, showing how women assign different degrees of responsibility to mass media regarding the construction of more or less risky situations in various areas of Milan. Overall, the role of media appears to be one of construction of a "mediated city" which connects with personal experiences and which constitutes a parameter for the perception of risk and safety in the city.
