In some defixiones and prayers of justice of the Latin provinces (Germania Superior, 70-130 AD and Britannia, III-II century AD), the support of the inscription is defined ‘c(h)arta’, although these texts are incised on lead. The hypothesis discussed in the present paper holds that the term – which entered into Latin as a loanword from the Greek (‘papyros or a roll made thereof’) – probably reflects a “split” of two components related to the material used: "a flat surface that can be rolled up"; hence, the canonical meaning ‘flat written sheet > document / letter’, or a secondary meaning – when applied to a specific context and environment – referred precisely to the idea of a text ‘written on a flat rolled surface’, which lends itself to connote a rolled lead sheet.
