A history of the word and notion of "artialisation" from Montaigne to Gérard Genette ("Quelles valeurs esthétiques") and Alain Roger ("Court traité du paysage"). Its use and abuse in the British and French contexts: the "artialisation" of Montaigne pages. The essay accounts for the process of "artialisation". It clarifies Montaigne's real and declared intention: "naturalize" the art (rather than to "artialize" nature), it accounts for Bolingbroke's (unhappy) attempt to introduce the notion in the English language, and Marmontel's (succesful) attempt to introduce it in the French language, and De Sanctis' and Croce's (exceptional) use of it in the Italian debate. If scientists and philosophers did (mistakenly) "artialize" nature, Montaigne would rather "naturalize" the art; yet, in reality, he advances an "artialized" notion of nature.
