This chapter explores internal dialogism as an aspect of polyphony in arbitration awards. More specifically, it draws on the notion of polyphony to examine arbitration awards as argumentative texts in which arbitrators construct their arguments giving account of the views of the parties and making reference to relevant texts, and in so doing they also respond to all possible objections and anticipate counterarguments by incorporating them in their decisions. In particular, the analysis focuses on concessive constructions, giving special attention to how they are exploited for dialogic purposes.

Abstract

This chapter explores internal dialogism as an aspect of polyphony in arbitration awards. More specifically, it draws on the notion of polyphony to examine arbitration awards as argumentative texts in which arbitrators construct their arguments giving account of the views of the parties and making reference to relevant texts, and in so doing they also respond to all possible objections and anticipate counterarguments by incorporating them in their decisions. In particular, the analysis focuses on concessive constructions, giving special attention to how they are exploited for dialogic purposes.
